How UroLift Works

Three simple steps

Access the prostate

The UroLift Delivery Device is placed through the obstructed urethra to access the enlarged prostate.

Place the implants

Small UroLift Implants are permanently placed to lift or hold the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way and increase the opening of the urethra. The permanent implants are delivered through a small needle that comes out of the delivery device and into the prostate.

Remove the device

The UroLift Delivery Device is removed, leaving an open urethra designed to provide symptom relief.

During the Procedure

What happens

Comfortable positioningYou will be situated comfortably on a table with your legs slightly elevated. There will be a monitor that the physician watches during the procedure.
AnesthesiaDepending on the setting (hospital or doctor’s office), local or general anesthesia is administered to maximize comfort.
Camera guidanceA thin tube containing a tiny camera is gently introduced through the urethra to determine where to place the implants.
Implants placedOnce the proper location is determined, several tiny implants are inserted. You’ll hear a “click” during placement — repeated on both sides until a sufficient opening is achieved.
What you may feelYou may feel some pressure and the urge to urinate — this is to be expected.
After the Procedure

What to expect

Voiding trialYou’ll be asked to urinate. If successful, you can go home. Most patients do not require a catheter after UroLift.
Occasional catheterIf you have difficulty urinating, a catheter may be inserted with instructions on when to have it removed.
Some sorenessYou may have soreness in the lower abdomen and it may be uncomfortable to sit.
Urinary changesYou may experience the need to urinate more frequently and with greater urgency.
Blood in urineSome blood in your urine — including an occasional blood clot — is a normal reaction.
Symptom timelineMost of these symptoms resolve within 2–4 weeks — this is normal.

Is the procedure performed in an office or hospital?
Please speak with your urologist to decide which location would be best for you. UroLift can be performed in either setting depending on your specific situation, medical history, and preferences.
When can I resume my usual activities?
Many men resume normal activities within a few days after the procedure. Your doctor will discuss any restrictions and your specific situation after your procedure.
Do I need to continue taking my BPH meds after the procedure?
No. A key benefit of UroLift is that you no longer have to take BPH medications after the procedure — that alone is a significant improvement in daily quality of life for many patients.
Does my prostate continue to grow even after I get UroLift? What if I need another procedure?
Yes, your prostate may continue to grow after the procedure. However, one unique aspect of the UroLift System is that it does not preclude retreatment or other BPH treatments, should that be needed and desired in the future. You keep all your options open.
How quickly can I expect to have symptom relief?
Patients typically show significant improvement in their symptoms by 2 weeks after the procedure.
