About the Procedure

What is a No-Scalpel Vasectomy?

A No-Scalpel Vasectomy is a modern, refined version of traditional vasectomy that uses a specialized instrument to create a tiny puncture in the scrotal skin rather than an incision. Through this small opening, the vas deferens (the tubes that carry sperm) are gently accessed, sectioned, and sealed — permanently preventing sperm from reaching the ejaculate.

Compared to traditional vasectomy, no-scalpel technique offers less bleeding, less pain, less swelling, and faster recovery. The procedure is performed in our office under local anesthesia — no general anesthesia, no operating room, no hospital stay. Most patients are back to desk work in 2-3 days.

The no-scalpel vasectomy is the most reliable form of contraception available — more effective than any reversible method. At Prestige Medical Group, this procedure is performed by Dr. Hari Sawkar, MD — a board-certified urologic surgeon known for a calm, efficient technique that puts patients at ease.

Who Benefits

Who is a candidate for vasectomy?

Vasectomy is chosen by men who want a permanent, highly reliable form of contraception — with the freedom to enjoy intimacy without ongoing planning.

Completed family planning

Men who are confident they don’t want more children (or don’t want children at all). Vasectomy is intended as a permanent decision — reversal is possible but not guaranteed.

Simplifying intimacy

Couples ready to enjoy intimacy without ongoing contraception planning, condoms, or the hormonal side effects that can come with female contraception methods.

Sharing the responsibility

Many couples choose vasectomy over female sterilization because it’s simpler, faster, less invasive, and lower risk than tubal ligation.

Highly reliable

Vasectomy has a >99% effectiveness rate — the most reliable form of contraception available, more effective than any reversible method.

Where Vasectomy Fits

Comparing contraception options

For couples who have decided their family is complete, no-scalpel vasectomy offers a distinctly favorable profile compared to other permanent or long-term options.

Clinical Note
Vasectomy should be considered permanent. Reversal surgery is possible but complex, expensive, and not always successful. This decision deserves thoughtful conversation before proceeding.
01

Reversible methods

Condoms, hormonal birth control, IUDs — effective but require ongoing effort or planning, and hormonal methods can carry side effects.

02

Female tubal ligation

Permanent option for women but requires general anesthesia, larger incisions or laparoscopic surgery, and longer recovery than vasectomy.

03

Traditional (incisional) vasectomy

Effective but uses scalpel incisions — more bleeding, swelling, and longer recovery than the no-scalpel technique.

04

No-Scalpel Vasectomy

Modern refinement — 30 minutes in-office, local anesthesia, no scalpel, less pain and swelling, 2-3 day recovery, >99% effectiveness.

How It Works

Three advantages over traditional vasectomy

The no-scalpel technique refines the traditional vasectomy across three key dimensions — with clear benefits for patient comfort and recovery.

Advantage 01

Tiny puncture only

A specialized dissecting instrument creates a small opening in the scrotal skin — no scalpel incision. The opening is so small it typically doesn’t require any stitches to close.

Advantage 02

Less bleeding & bruising

Because there’s no scalpel incision, there’s significantly less bleeding, swelling, and bruising — meaning less discomfort during recovery and less time before you feel normal again.

Advantage 03

Faster recovery

Most men return to office/desk work within 2-3 days and to normal activities (including exercise) within a week — considerably faster than traditional vasectomy.

The Procedure

What to expect on procedure day

The whole procedure takes about 30 minutes from start to finish. You’ll be awake and comfortable throughout — under local anesthesia only. You can drive yourself home afterward, though a ride is often preferable.

01

Arrival & prep

You’ll change into a gown and get comfortable. Dr. Sawkar reviews the procedure, answers any last questions, and confirms your decision to proceed.

02

Local anesthesia

A gentle local anesthetic is applied to the scrotal skin — you’ll feel a brief pinch then numbness. No IV, no general anesthesia.

03

The procedure

Using the no-scalpel technique, Dr. Sawkar creates a tiny opening, gently accesses each vas deferens, sections and seals them, and you’re done — typically in 15-20 minutes of active work.

04

Home to recover

A brief rest in the office to make sure everything’s comfortable, then home to relax with ice and rest. You’ll receive written instructions for the next few days.

Recovery Timeline

What recovery looks like

Recovery is straightforward for the vast majority of patients. The first 48 hours involve rest and ice; most men are back to normal within a week.

First 48 hours
Rest and ice. Take it easy at home. Ice packs and OTC pain relief handle most discomfort. Athletic supporter helps.
Days 3-5
Back to work. Most men return to desk/office work within 2-3 days. Avoid heavy lifting and vigorous activity.
Week 1-2
Resuming exercise. Gentle activity resumes at the end of week 1. Full exercise and normal activities by end of week 2.
3 months
Post-op semen analysis. Contraception must still be used until a semen analysis confirms no sperm are present — typically at 3 months.
Common Questions

No-Scalpel Vasectomy questions answered

Have a question not answered here? Call (949) 825-7650 to speak with our team.

Does it hurt?
Most patients report the procedure is significantly less uncomfortable than they anticipated. The initial pinch of the local anesthetic is briefly uncomfortable, but the rest of the procedure is largely painless. Some pressure sensations are normal. Post-procedure discomfort is usually manageable with OTC pain relief and ice.
How soon can I have sex again?
Most patients resume sexual activity around 1 week after the procedure — once discomfort has resolved. However, you must continue to use contraception until a follow-up semen analysis (typically at 3 months) confirms no sperm are present. Vasectomy is not immediately effective — residual sperm remain in the reproductive tract for weeks after the procedure.
Will my sex drive, erections, or ejaculation change?
No. Vasectomy only sections the vas deferens — the small tubes that carry sperm. It does not affect testosterone, sex drive, erections, orgasm, or the volume or feel of ejaculation. The ejaculate simply no longer contains sperm.
Is it reversible?
Vasectomy should be considered permanent. Reversal (vasovasostomy) is possible but is a more complex microsurgical procedure, is expensive, and is not always successful — success rates decline the longer it’s been since the vasectomy. Anyone with uncertainty about future family planning should not proceed with vasectomy.
Who performs no-scalpel vasectomies at Prestige Medical Group?
No-scalpel vasectomies at Prestige Medical Group are performed by Dr. Hari Sawkar, MD — a board-certified urologic surgeon whose calm demeanor and refined technique consistently receive patient praise for making the experience easier than expected.
Is it covered by insurance?
Most insurance plans cover vasectomy. Under the Affordable Care Act, many plans cover it as preventive care with no copay. Coverage varies by plan — our team can help verify your specific benefits when scheduling.
How effective is vasectomy compared to other contraception?
Vasectomy is >99% effective — the most reliable form of contraception available. This assumes proper post-procedure protocol is followed, including a confirmatory semen analysis at 3 months before discontinuing other contraception.
