How Is PAE Performed?

PAE is an outpatient procedure that typically takes one to two hours, is minimally invasive, and causes little discomfort.

An experienced interventional radiologist inserts a small catheter (about 1–2 mm) into an artery in the wrist or upper thigh using ultrasound and X-ray guidance. Once the arteries supplying the prostate are identified, the doctor injects microscopic particles to block these vessels.

This targeted reduction in blood flow causes the prostate to shrink over time, relieving pressure on the urethra and improving urinary symptoms — all in a single, same-day treatment.

Who Is an Ideal Candidate?

• Men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) confirmed by imaging or diagnostic evaluation
• Moderate to severe urinary symptoms affecting quality of life
• Symptoms not adequately managed with medications or causing medication side effects
• Seeking a minimally invasive alternative to surgery or not a candidate for surgical procedures

What Are the Results of PAE?

• Most patients go home the same day and resume light activity within 24 hours
• Symptom improvement is often noticed within weeks, with continued relief over several months
• Studies show significant reductions in prostate size and better urine flow for most patients
• Side effects are rare and mild, such as temporary pelvic discomfort or urinary frequency
