This procedure is performed for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence. Local anesthesia is placed into the bladder through a small catheter and allowed to remain for 15-20 minutes to take effect. A cystoscope is placed into the bladder in order to visualize the bladder wall and urethra. Several injections of Macroplastique urethral bulking agent are then injected into the urethra, thereby closing off the urethra enough to help with incontinence but still allowing you to be able to void. It takes approximately 15-20 minutes but expect to be at the appointment for one hour. You will start a 5 day course of antibiotics the day prior to the procedure and take a valium or similar sedative medication one hour prior to the procedure so need to have a driver to and from the office. After effects may include blood in the urine, slight burning with urination and the temporary inability to void requiring catheterization.
